The people of Judah committed many sins and were not ready to repent just as we have it today. They loved what they ought not to love, as they worshipped the sun, moon, host of heaven, graven images, etc (verses 2, 19) . They made vain God’s instructions by violating them. They thought that’s the definition of wisdom (verses 8-9). Haven’t they read that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom? Wisdom is when we accept God’s word [not by mouth but in deed].

Prophets that ought to tell them the mind of God and His judgments told them lies, giving them no rebuke. Now, how would they be ashamed of their wrongs when there is no good councillor? (verses 10-12, Proverbs 11:14) . As a result, they were not moved anytime they sinned. Sin was a norm unto them.
Before we cast stones, let’s examine ourselves. Are we not repeating these people’s mistakes as His people and prophets? It’s painful that most so-called Christians and pastors act like these people of old. Even though we don’t have any image we are bowing to, we worship our wealth, work, spouse, children, fame, etc. We love these things more than God by placing them higher than Him. Our prophets too are busy giving us diluted word of God. The church is now a place where sinners can sit comfortably and hear sermons filled with physical prosperity (healing, financial breakthroughs, etc) instead of spiritual prosperity which births the former (Matthew 6:33). We no longer rebuke anyone, instead, we speak about them in secret. The Bible says it’s shameful! (see Ephesians 5:11-12).
The consequences of these things are (I don’t even know the qualifying adjective). Please, check Deuteronomy 28:15-45 for the earthly consequences . If earthly (temporal) consequences are like that, how much more the one that lasts forever?
The good news is that God is calling us back to Him.
“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:18-19).
